that turns your blood to ice
fear that overwhelms you

when you get a phone call

in the middle of the night.

that feeling

that sucks the air
from your lungs
because you know

when you answer

that phone
because you know
that one call
will change
your life forever.

i had that feeling today

when i remembered
that you’re not coming back

and it really is over.
